Here’s a cozy, classic recipe for Baked Cabbage Rolls—soft cabbage leaves stuffed with savory meat and rice, baked in a rich tomato sauce.

🥬 Baked Cabbage Rolls (Comfort Food Classic)

🧾 Ingredients

For the rolls:

  • 1 large head cabbage
  • 500g ground beef or lamb (or mixed)
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 egg (optional, helps bind)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika or Italian seasoning

For the sauce:

  • 2 cups tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, balances acidity)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prepare cabbage leaves

  • Bring a large pot of water to boil.
  • Carefully remove cabbage leaves.
  • Boil leaves for 2–3 minutes until soft and flexible.
  • Drain and set aside.

2. Make the filling

  • Mix ground meat, cooked rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and seasoning in a bowl.
  • Combine well but don’t overmix.

3. Roll them

  • Place a spoonful of filling on each cabbage leaf.
  • Fold sides in, then roll tightly like a wrap.

4. Prepare baking dish

  • Spread a little tomato sauce on the bottom of a baking dish.
  • Arrange cabbage rolls seam-side down.

5. Add sauce & bake

  • Mix tomato sauce, paste, broth, and seasoning.
  • Pour over rolls until mostly covered.
  • Cover with foil and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 60–75 minutes.

6. Serve

  • Let rest 10 minutes before serving.
  • Optional: top with sour cream or fresh herbs.

🌟 Tips

  • Add a bit of lemon juice or vinegar for brightness in the sauce.
  • Use uncooked rice inside if you want it to absorb more flavor (just add extra liquid and longer cooking time).
  • For a lighter version, use ground turkey and cauliflower rice.
  • These taste even better the next day.

🧠 What makes them special

Cabbage rolls are popular across many cuisines because they’re:

  • filling and budget-friendly
  • freezer-friendly
  • deeply comforting and customizable

If you want, I can give you a low-carb cabbage roll version, slow cooker method, or Middle Eastern-style spiced version 👍
