Popeye’s Copycat Fried Chicken

Posted on April 25, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a solid Popeyes-style copycat fried chicken recipe—crispy, juicy, and heavily seasoned (the key is the marinade + spice-heavy flour).

🍗 Popeyes Copycat Fried Chicken

🧾 Ingredients

Chicken

  • 1 kg chicken pieces (drumsticks, thighs, wings work best)

Buttermilk marinade

  • 2 cups buttermilk (or milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice)
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce (optional but recommended)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Coating

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (for extra crispiness)
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper (adjust for heat)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1–1½ tsp salt

For frying

  • Neutral oil (enough for deep frying)

🔪 Instructions

1. Marinate the chicken

  • Mix chicken with buttermilk + spices
  • Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours (overnight is best)

👉 This makes it juicy and tender inside

2. Prepare coating

  • Mix all flour + spices in a large bowl
  • Optional: add a pinch of baking powder for extra crunch

3. Coat the chicken

  • Remove chicken from marinade
  • Let excess drip off
  • Dredge in flour mixture
  • Press flour firmly onto chicken
  • For extra crunch: dip back into marinade and coat again (double dredge)

4. Fry

  • Heat oil to 170–180°C (340–355°F)
  • Fry in batches (don’t overcrowd)
  • Cook:
    • Wings: 8–10 min
    • Drumsticks/thighs: 12–15 min

👉 Chicken should be golden brown and fully cooked inside

5. Rest

  • Place on rack or paper towel for a few minutes
  • This keeps the crust crispy

🔥 What makes it “Popeyes-style”

  • Heavy seasoning in both marinade + flour
  • Buttermilk tenderizing
  • Cornstarch for extra crunch
  • Proper frying temperature control

🧠 Pro tips

  • Don’t skip marinating (this is key for juiciness)
  • Use a thermometer if possible
  • Let chicken rest before serving so crust sets

🍽️ Serve with

  • Fries 🍟
  • Coleslaw 🥗
  • Biscuits or bread

🧩 Bottom line

This isn’t just fried chicken—it’s double-seasoned, crispy, juicy comfort food done properly.
